The George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) at Cornell University is one among fifteen research laboratories funded by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) for construction, expansion and modernization of the nation's earthquake engineering experimental research.

The Cornell Large Displacement Facility is a unique, world-class resource for research, education, and outreach focused on underground lifeline response to large ground deformation and the seismic performance of highly ductile above-ground structures using advanced materials and construction.

The NEES network aims at:

  • Improving the seismic design and performance of civil and environmental infrastructure systems.
  • Using advanced experimental and simulation capabilities in order to test and validate more complex and comprehensive analytical and computer numerical models.
  • Providing end-to-end system connectivity in order to operate distributed experimental research equipments, including telepresence and to enable computation and distributed simulation for engineering earthquake experiments.
  • Providing researchers with a remote access to a repository of databases, user developed simulation software, and models for use in model based simulation and visualization through access to a computational grid.
  • Forming an integrated network that facilitates interdisciplinary global collaboration among researchers and engineers.
